Reading time added to Word counter

  in Taal & Literatuur

A lot of sites I read regularly, such as that of newspaper NRC, display reading times for each article. I have added the same functionality to the Word counter tool at https://www.reuneker.nl/files/wordcount, so you can get an indication of reading times for your own texts.

You can set an average of words per minutes (wpm), or just leave it at 250, which I find more realistic than what is considered the average for adults, i.e. approximately 300 words per minute (see Quantz, 1898). To read about why this average is debatable, see Brysbaert (2019).

I find it rather useful just to get an indication for presentation texts, script for voice-overs and such. I hope you'll find it useful too!

Fixing the TomTom Rider 0:00 problem

  in Reizen

Another very quick post. It occurred to me that my old TomTom, after dusting it off, did not retain time. I could set the correct time, and within minutes, it would switch back to 0:00. Very annoying, of course, but there is a fix. I did not create it, but I'd like to share it.

The quick and easy fix can be found at: https://www.rima-lock.com/tomtom-urban-rider-K3-WNRO-fix.htm

It solved the problem for my TomTom Rider Urban/Pro, and I hope it'll help others too.

New calculator: from time and distance to pace

  in Sport

I've made a new calculator today. You can enter a time and distance, and calculate the average pace. Nothing fancy, bu sometimes it's handy to do a quick calculation like that.

Let's say that you ran a 15K race in 1 hour and 15 minutes. What pace have you run at? It turns out that you had an average pace of 5 minutes per kilometer. And what about a 10M in 59 minutes and 58 seconds? Your pace was 3:44.
